When a child has experienced trauma, he or she may continue to react defensively even in situations that are not threatening. Our therapists work to help children identify those trauma areas and how to work through them. Specifically, Occupational Therapist Lisa Van Heukelom attended a three-day conference hosted by the Association for Training on Trauma and Attachment in Children to learn additional techniques to best facilitate the process for kids to open that space where the trauma is held.
“Sometimes kids are not ready to talk about their experience,” said Van Heukelom. “Through the approach I learned, we can provide them with another way of communicating and working through their trauma.”
